A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
